Turkey – SMART

An official source accuses the United Nations of hampering the return of Syrian refugees in Lebanon to their hometown of al-Zabadani in western Damascus, Southern Syria.

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, said that the U.N. demanded Lebanese authorities to prevent the return of Syrian families because their marriages and births have not been registered officially in neither Lebanon nor Syria.

The source added that the U.N. hired lawyers to register the marriages and births.

The source reported that about 200 Syrian refugees have registered to return to al-Zabadani so far. The Syrian government guaranteed that none of the refugees will be arrested or conscripted.

The source added that the initiative of returning refugees is led by the local council of the city of al-Zabadani of the Syrian government and the announcer Kinana Houaija, who works for a government T.V. channel.

Activists from al-Zabadani posted on social media that the refugees were supposed to return to the city on Saturday, to coincide with the second day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr; however, the return was delayed. The refugees sold the furniture of their houses in Lebanon and are ready to move.

The loyalist forces entered al-Zabadani after the Four Cities agreement was reached and the opposition fighters in the area went to Northern Syria.
