Aleppo - SMART

The poverty and necessity to work to make a living prevented four children from the city of Azaz near Aleppo, Northern Syria, from enjoying the happy moments of the 'Eid like most children.

The three days of 'Eid al-Fitr were just like any others for Kholud and her three siblings, who woke up at six in the morning and headed for the streets to gather plastic materials to sell to support their selves and their sick father, who is unable to work.

During the 'Eid days, the 10-year-old girl, Kholud, searched with her siblings for plastic materials, while grief filled their eyes as they saw the other children celebrate. Kholud and her siblings could not buy new clothes this year, and they roamed the streets barefoot or in their worn-out shoes.

Kholud reported that they do not have money to buy new clothes and enjoy the 'Eid as the other children do, adding, "My siblings and I have only God."

Kholud added that she and her siblings do not go to school because their situation does not allow that; working is a priority for them. Kholud's brother, Abdul Mun'em, says, "I do not study or go to school. We live from this work we do every day."

The four children live with their father northeast of Azaz in a tent that lacks the basic living needs. The shelter had old equipment and worn out blankets that they use during the freezing winter nights.

A large number of children in Syria live under declined humanitarian conditions, similar to what should and her siblings suffer, due to the bombings, clashes and displacement that occurred in the areas outside the loyalist forces' control, in addition to the loyalist forces' detaining of tens of thousands of young men, preventing them from supporting their families.
