Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, a Hisbah cleric from the opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) assaulted the Head of the Examinations Department of the Faculty of Literature at the Univesity of Idlib.

Hisbah is an Islamic doctrine literally meaning "accountability," which sanctions figures of authority to "enjoin good and forbid wrong" among Muslims.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition group previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Deen, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Hisbah cleric assaulted the Head of the Examinations Department, Rawda Atiq, in protest of her clothing. Atiq was injured and brought to a nearby hospital.

On Saturday, the HTS closed the private University of Ibla in the city of Saraqib and arrested its director. Last May, members of the Religious Guards Organization stormed the same university under the pretext to segregate men from women.
