Deir ez-Zor - SMART

The Islamic State (ISIS) released detainees from its prisons in the town of Shaafa, 100 kilometers east of Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria.

Activist Mohamed Hassan told SMART that ISIS released a number of civilians and some of its members, who have recently been detained in order to win people over in their battles against the Syrian Democratic Forces and the International Coalition.

Hassan confirmed that most of the released prisoners spent more than four months in ISIS prisons. The prisoners were arrested on various charges, including attempting to escape from ISIS-controlled areas during fights against the SDF. Other reasons included legal violations or criticising ISIS policy.

Hassan added that the release did not include the activists detained by ISIS. He stated that there are a large number of detainees in an ISIS prison in Hajeen city (95 kilometers east of Deir ez-Zor).

ISIS regularly arrests people in areas under its control. Other charges on which a person may be arrested include: dealing with the Free Syrian Army, the International Coalition, or the SDF, and non-compliance with ISIS' laws, where it imprisons some while killing others in different ways.
