Aleppo - SMART

On Wednesday, dozens of teachers demonstrated in front of the Free Aleppo Directorate of Education's headquarters in the city of al-Atarib, 30 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, to pressure the directorate to extend more than 1,200 substitute teachers' contracts permanently.

More than 150 teachers participated in the demonstration, carrying signs that read, "Should kindness be repaid but with kindness? Do us justice," "We form 70 percent of the education personnel, we are the majority and we will not accept the unjust rule of the minority" and "Save the substitute teachers from the frogs of the education directorate."

Talhat Shahid, a teacher demonstrator, said that the directorate of education promised to extend the substitute teachers' contracts after submitting them to tests, but the directorate has not fulfilled its promises after the teachers worked voluntarily for five years.

Ahmad Yousef, an English teacher, said that the teachers were sat tests in 2016, and they were accepted accordingly, only to learn about the surprising decision by the directorate of education, which excluded the substitute teachers and gave permanent contracts to four-year university students instead.

Several educational directorates of the Syrian Interim Government work on training and qualifying substitute and newly graduated teachers to increasing their teaching skills, but several teachers are forced to work on a voluntary basis.

The educational process in the areas under the Free Syrian Army and Islamist factions' control faces great difficulties, such as a lack of financial support and the Russian and loyalist forces' bombings that target schools and educational facilities.
