Al-Raqqa - SMART

The Initial Response Team continues to pull the bodies from beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, on a daily basis.

On Wednesday, local sources told SMART that the Response Team pulled eight bodies of civilians from one family from under the rubble of a destroyed residential building in the al-Badou neighborhood. The team continues to search in the neighborhood in which many buildings were destroyed.

The team also pulled eight bodies of unknown persons, including two women, out from the Panorama park south of the city, which is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Activists hold the International Coalition and the SDF responsible for the killing of hundreds of civilians in al-Raqqa during the intense and indiscriminate bombing on the city. The bombing was part of a battle with the Islamic State for control of the city. The IS also killed civilians in bombings and by landmines.

The International Coalition recently admitted to killing 1,059 civilians in airstrikes on Syria and Iraq from August 2014 until the end of June 2018. Mass graves of people killed by the IS were also discovered.
