Turkey, SMART

On Friday, the Iraqi Army said that Iraqi warplanes destroyed an Islamic State (IS) operations room in Syria, killing IS members.

The Iraqi Army published a statement saying that Iraqi F-16 warplanes bombed the IS' operations room, killing its members and destroying explosive belts’ carriers, as the IS members were planning to launch cross-border attacks to kill innocent people.

The Iraqi Army did not provide the accurate location of the bombing; however, the army said that the bombing followed accurate information by the al-Soqoor intelligence group in the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency  of the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior.

The Iraqi Army launches frequent airstrikes against IS outposts in Syria near the Iraqi border. In December 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister announced that the Iraqi Army regained control of the entire Iraqi territories from the IS following months of battles that resulted in controlling different cities, including Mosul, the most prominent IS stronghold in Iraq.

The IS lost most of the areas it used to control in Syria after military campaigns launched by the International Coalition backed Syrian Democratic Forces, and the Turkish backed Free Syrian Army factions. The IS areas were limited to small enclaves in al-Hasakah, Deir er-Zor, and the al-Sham Badiya.
