Deir ez-Zor - SMART

On Friday, residents complained about the high cost of water in the city of Albuqmal, 120 kilometers south of Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria. The water costs 6,000 Syrian pounds (12 US dollars) per cubic meter.

A source from among the residents, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, said that the only two neighborhoods with running water are al-Katef and Tuwaibah. Al-Katef and Tuwaibah are close to the water station, which pumps water twice a week; however, receiving the water is made more difficult due to the lack of electricity needed to run household pumps.

The price of water ranges between 2,500 and 6,000 SYP depending on its quality. Residents are forced to buy water due to the poor water network, which was damaged during bombings on Albuqamal by the Syrian government forces, Russia and the International Coalition against the Islamic State (IS).

Water tank vendors justify their high prices based on the dangers of gathering water from the Euphrates River. According to the vendors, there are IS snipers on the opposite bank.

On Nov. 21, 2017, the Syrian government forces and its loyal militias seized the city of Albuqamal after the IS withdrew from it.
