Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Wednesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced gaining control of several Islamic State (IS) locations in Eastern Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces are comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

The SDF stated that they gained control of 17 locations on the perimeter of the village of al-Baghoz Foqani. The SDF also gained control of 10 other locations on the perimeter of the village of al-Kasra after clashes with the IS. International Coalition warplanes supported the SDF during the clashes.

The SDF added that the clashes killed 41 IS members and six SDF members, in addition to destroying several IS vehicles.

Local sources reported that the SDF broke the IS defense in the village of al-Baghoz with an intensified artillery and aerial shelling.

The sources added that the IS is besieging 15 SDF members near the town of al-Susah, as the SDF sent reinforcement to block the siege.

Last Tuesday, the SDF announced starting the last stage of the Euphrates Anger Operation to expel the IS from Deir al-Zor.

The IS still controls a few towns and villages of Eastern Deir al-Zor, such as Hajin, Abu al-Khater, Abu al-Hasan, al-Sha'fah, and al-Susah, all besieged by the SDF the Syrian government forces and their militias.
