Homs - SMART

On Thursday, a child died in the al-Rukban camp for forcibly displaced people on the Syrian-Jordanian border (237 kilometers southeast of Homs) due to lack of healthcare and refusal to transfer him to Jordanian hospitals after closing the only medical clinic there.

The head of the civil affairs office at the al-Rukban camp, Abdullah al-Oqba, told SMART that the child Mohammed al-Aater died as a result of lack of health care. The camp's doctors were unable to determine his illness. The Jordanian authorities and the United Nations Children's Fund Jordanian refused to transfer him to Jordanian hospitals.

Al-Oqba held both the Kingdom of Jordan and the United Nations responsibility for the death of the 13-year-old boy because of closing the only official medical clinic in the camp six days ago.

Al-Oqba explained that the child needed to do medical tests and photos to determine the disease that infected him. Al-Oqba noted that the child remained for about five days unable to eat or drink, and can not urinate.

The head of the civil affairs office in the camp said that they transferred the child to a clinic of the Jaysh Maghaweer al-Thawra. Doctors expected him to have diabetes, which requires immediate entry into Jordan, but the Jordan and UNICEF did not respond. Therefore, he died.

The Jordanian authorities closed the only official medical clinic in the al-Rukban camp six days ago, and stopped the entry of cars to the clinic, without clarifying the reason.

The camp suffers from a lack of livelihood opportunities and a deteriorating health and education situation. The U.N. Goodwill Ambassador to the Middle East considered the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner in Amman "has not faithfully performed its duty" towards the camp.
