Deir al-Zor - SMART

The local council of the Interim Syrian Government in the governorate of Deir al-Zor refused to extend its work for three months at the request of the Interim Government.

The Interim Syrian Government is an alternative to the Syrian government to manage the areas outside Syrian government control.

On Monday, the head of the local council, Anas Fatih, told SMART that the Executive Office has decided to terminate its work after the end of its official mandate because international organizations didn't provide the necessary assistance and services to the people of Deir al-Zor and its forcibly displaced people (FDP) during this year.

According to a statement published by the governorate council, the Executive Office has repeatedly contacted international organizations for assistance and support, including the US State Department, the European Union and the Turkish government, as well as international organizations including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Human Rights Council, they received no response.

Earlier, the local council of Deir al-Zor governorate has suspended its work for 20 days in protest against "ignoring the suffering" of FDP in the governorate and not paying attention to their assistance.

On Aug. 10, the Deir al-Zor council was formed after a meeting in the Turkish city of Gaziantep in the presence of 26 out of 43 people in Turkey and two out of it. They elected 12 people, including the head of the council, Dr. Anas Fatih, and his deputy, Brigadier General Abdul Basset.

The Syrian government forces and the Islamic State (IS) clashed in some areas of Deir al-Zor. Although the IS lost most of the its-controlled areas in recent months, after battles with both the Syrian government forces, supported by Russia and Iran and the SDF, sponsored by the International Coalition.
