Idlib - SMART

The Foundational board of the Salvation Government operating in the areas under the control of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) , which is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, in Idlib, Northern Syria, urged the military factions to remain at the frontlines against the Syrian government forces, as a retaliation to the Turkish-Russian agreement.

The foundational board, tribal dignitaries and several local bodies issued a closing statement after a seminar they held in the Idlib city, urging the military factions to unify their ranks and work under “one operations room of one army,” and urging them to stay at the frontlines and not to surrender weapons.

A week earlier, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, agreed to establish a demilitarized zone in Idlib, and expel the “terrorist groups” from the governorate. The agreement was signed after the Syrian government forces, and Russia threatened to launch a military operation in the governorate, the thing that Turkey refused.

The Salvation Government’s foundational board affirmed the continuation of the Syrian Revolution and demanded the release of detainees from the Syrian government prisons and the return of displaced people to their areas, without a Russian presence in these areas.

Bassam Sahyouni, the foundational board president, stated to SMART that around 500 people of local bodies and tribal dignitaries from the Idlib, Hama, Aleppo and Lattakia countryside participated in the seminar and expressed their concerns regarding Russian statements, which encouraged to storm the governorate, contradicting the agreement with Turkey, according to Sahyouni.

Sahyouni pointed out that the Russian statements generated an “absolute” state of discomfort among the people, and made them fear what Russia might do in the coming days.
