Idlib - SMART

Dozens of civilians demonstrate in front of a Turkish observation base near the village of al-Sarman, 40 kilometers east of Idlib, Northern Syria, to demand the withdrawal of the Syrian government forces from the villages west of the al-Hijaz railway, in accordance with the Astana talks decisions.

The demonstrators demanded the Turkish forces in the observation base to put pressure on the Syrian government to implement the decisions made during the Astana talks, which included the withdrawal of the Syrian government forces from the areas east of the al-Hijaz railway.

The demonstrators said that the Syrian government forces "occupy the villages," demanding Turkey to pressure Russia into allowing civilians to return to their homes. The demonstrators also praised Turkey for its efforts in stopping the military attack on Idlib.

Earlier, people organized several demonstrations in front of Turkish observation base, to demand Turkey to intervene in the Idlib governorate. Other demonstrators demanded Russia and the Syrian government to stop the bombings and withdraw to allow displaced people to return to their homes.

In January, 2018, the Syrian government forces, supported by foreign militias, advanced into Eastern Idlib along the al-Hijaz railway, seizing the Abu al-Duhur military airbase. The Syrian government forces continued to advance and seized more areas in Eastern Idlib, displacing thousands of civilians.
