Latakia - SMART

Local sources reported that on Tuesday morning, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) withdrew its last tank from the Kurds and Turkmen Mountains in Northern Latakia, Western Syria, as part of the agreement to establish a demilitarized zone in the outskirts of Idlib governorate.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

According to the sources, the HTS has withdrawn eight tanks and some guns in the recent days. The site, to which these weapons were transferred, is still unknown because most of the transferring operations occurred during the night.

The HTS did not announce its support for the Turkish-Russian agreement, but it has begun with the rest of the factions in Northern Syria to withdraw their weapons from the demilitarized zone since October. 6. The spokesman of the National Liberation Front, Captain Naji Mustafa, said that the factions' headquarters would remain in their place.

Earlier, activists reported that on Sunday morning, five tanks withdrew from the Kurds and Turkmen Mountains. Later in the evening, two tanks withdrew, without knowing whether these tanks belong to the HTS or other factions.

On Sunday morning, the HTS withdrew a tank from the vicinity of the Khudr Hill in the Kurds Mountain and took it to late sites in Idlib countryside.

On Sept. 17, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reached an agreement to establish a demilitarized zone in the Idlib governorate.
