Aleppo - SMART

Two factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) arrested a kidnapping gang in the Afrin area, 42 kilometers north of Aleppo, Northern Syria, after the factions lured the gang into the area.

Abu Bilal, a media officer for the al-Sharqiyah Army, told SMART that the al-Sharqiyah Army and the al-Shamal Brigade factions of the FSA arrested several people that had formed a gang to kidnap civilians and demand ransoms in exchange for their safe return.

The two factions broadcasted videos showing the confessions of two of the gang members, as three others appeared in the background.

One of the gang members, Maher Muhammad al-Sheikh, said that he belonged to the FSA’s Suqur al-Shamal Brigade, adding that he held the position of the brigade’s head of security in the Afrin area.

Another gang member said that he came from Idlib to the Afrin area with a man called Abu Huzayfah to kidnap a civilian and ask for a ransom of 50,000 US dollars (about 25 million Syrian pounds).

A member of the al-Sharqiyah Army pointed out that Abu Huzayfah is an alias of an al-Sharqiyah Army member that lured the gang into an ambush by the al-Sharqiyah Army and the al-Shamal Brigade.

Kidnappings are common in the Afrin area. Earlier, activists accused the Hamza Division of the FSA of kidnapping a woman and her daughter, while the division denied the accusations. Unknown kidnappers released a young woman from the city of Afrin after receiving a ransom of 10,000 USD, while other kidnappers abducted a pharmacist heading from the city of Azaz to the city of Afrin.
