Aleppo - SMART

The Syrian government forces detonated an explosive device and disarmed a number of others in the al-Salihin neighborhood in Eastern Aleppo, Northern Syria, and the village of al-Amiriya in its southern countryside, during a high security alert in the region.

A local source from the city of Aleppo told SMART that the Syrian government forces disarmed six landmines in the neighborhood of al-Salihin and detonated a landmine during a campaign to remove explosive devices and landmines from the city. The source added that the Syrian government forces raised the security levele to high at its checkpoints.

Earlier, the Syrian government media announced that its forces will detonate explosive devices and ammunition in the neighborhood of al-Salihin between 9 am and 1 pm. They will carry out similar operations in the village of al-Amiriya between 10 am and 2 pm.

Landmines and unexploded cluster bombs left behind shelling by the Syrian government and the Russian forces are common in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo. The shelling destroyed the city's infrastructure, including several hospitals. The Syrian government seized Aleppo at the end of 2016 as part of an agreement that led the displacement of civilians and opposition fighters.
