Deir al-Zor - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced killing 12 Islamic State (IS) members during clashes in Eastern Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces are comprised of predominantly Kurdish multi-ethnic, Arab, and Assyrian/Syriac militias led by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The SDF operate mostly in Northern Syria, including al-Raqqa and Deir al- Zor.

The SDF stated that their members blocked an IS attack on SDF locations near the village of Baghouz al-Foqani, 125 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor, after clashes between the parties. During the clashes, both the SDF and IS used heavy weapons and mortar shells. The United States-led International Coalition targeted the IS locations with M142 HIMARS missiles, killing several IS members.

The SDF stated that the SDF launched an attack on IS locations near the city of Hajin, and advanced on the city's perimeters. International Coalition warplanes raided IS locations three times, according to the statement. The SDF reported that they disarmed six landmines after advancing toward Hajin.

The statement did not mention any casualties among the SDF.

One month ago, the SDF announced launching the last phase of the al-Jazeera Storm Operation to regain control of the IS-controlled areas in Eastern Deir al-Zor. The operation killed and injured members from both parties, in addition to displacing civilians.
