Deir al-Zor - SMART

People from the Deir al-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria, complained about a lack of sufficient hospitals in the area, after most hospitals, such as the al-Furat and the al-Nour hospitals, were destroyed by the Syrian government forces and Russian bombings, forcing the people to head for Damascus for treatment.

The sources said that the only hospitals operating in the city are Al-Assad hospital and the Iranian hospital in the al-Qusor neighborhood, which is run by Iranian staff, along with some nurses from the area. The two hospitals do not charge patients but are not capable of serving the people from far away areas, such as the Harabish, al-Sia'a, al-Ardi, and al-Hamidiyah neighborhoods.

Patients and people visiting the hospital were witnesses to discrimination on the part of the medical staff and the employees, as the medical staff prefers to operate on the families of the Syrian government forces at first and make other people wait for very long time. This behavior forces people to send their patients to Damascus, especially those with critical conditions, such as cerebral hemorrhage and kidney failure.

Other sources from the city of Albu Kamal, Southeastern Deir al-Zor, said that the city has only one medical center with a general practitioner and few nurses, the medical center lacks medicine and supplies.".

People from the Albu Kamal surrounding areas also complain about having three medical centers located in the town of al-Sukkariyah and the villages of Suway'iyah and al-Hari. These centers lack treatment for chronic diseases or  medicine and offer the patients painkillers only.

Last year, the Syrian government forces and their allied militias seized Albu Kamal after the Islamic State withdrew from the city, and launched arrest campaigns against civilians in the city.
