Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Thursday, a landmine exploded during battles between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Islamic State (IS) in the city of Hajin, 95 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, killing and injuring six SDF members.

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

A military source reported to SMART that the landmine exploded while the SDF members swept the al-Hawamah neighborhood in Hajin, killing four of them and injuring two. The injured SDF members were transported to a military medical point.

On Tuesday, another landmine explosion killed five SDF members and injured three, as the members attempted to advance into the al-Hawamah neighborhood.

On Nov. 11, 2018, the SDF announced resuming their military operations against the IS in the Deir al-Zor governorate, after stopping for about 13 days due to Turkish attacks against SDF-controlled villages east of the Euphrates river.
