Turkey - SMART

On Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that about 250,000 Syrian refugees could return to Syria next year.

Amin Awad, head of the Middle East and North Africa department at the UNHCR, said that they expect about 250,000 Syrians to return to Syria in 2019. Awad added that the Syrian government should contribute to removing obstacles against their return, including personal documents and property.

Awad did not mention the security obstacles that prevent Syrians from returning to Syria, and fears of arrests by the Syrian government forces. Earlier, the Syrian government forces arrested dozens of civilians at border crossings or airports during their return to Syria, despite receiving guarantees not to arrest them, and enlisted number of them to serve in its ranks.

The UNHCR revealed that about 37,000 Syrians returned to their homes this year. The UNHCR added that about 5.6 million Syrian refugees still live in countries neighboring Syria.

Thousands of Syrian refugees from Lebanon returned to Syria under agreements between the Syrian government and the Lebanese government, which puts restrictions on the refugees living in its territories to force them to return. The Lebanese government sometimes arrests Syrian refugees, forcing them to sign voluntary return papers.

Earlier, the head of the Syrian Center for Legal Studies and Research, lawyer Anwar al-Bunni, reported that the Syrian government forces arrested more than 20 Syrian refugees in Lebanon during their return to Syria, according to a settlement they had made voluntarily.
