Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, an official in the People in Need Organization stated that they have no information about who abducted their employee Hamdou al-’Omar in Idlib, Northern Syria.

Mazen Shaheen, the manager of the organization office added that they lost contact with al-’Omar on Monday as he was in an area that is outside of the control of the Salvation Government. Shaheen noted that they did not know whether al-’Omar was kidnapped, detained, or had other accident.

Shaheen refused to name the area in which they lost contact with al-’Omar fearing for the latter’ safety. Shaheen added, “We contact the Salvation Government (..) We follow up the matter with all active sides.”, however, Shaheen did not name the sides.

The Syrian Salvation Government is an alternative Syrian government affiliated with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formed without an election at the end of November 2017. It has been located in the Idlib Governorate since the HTS took control of the border, and it does not work or associate with the Interim Syrian Government.

On Tuesday, activists reported that two HTS groups ambushed al-’Omar after he left the village of Tal al-Karameh towards the city of Sarmada in Northern Idlib. The activists added that the HTS blocked al-Omar's way and arrested him.

Earlier, the HTS arrested civilians, doctors, and humanitarian organizations and civil society groups staff on different charges. Kidnappings are common on a large scale in the Idlib governorate, targeting military commanders and fighters.
