Syrian government and SDF meet to discuss Turkish threats and hand over oil wells

On Thursday, private sources told SMART that the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) held talks regarding the Turkish threats of a military operation in the area east of the Euphrates River. The discussions included that the SDF would hand over oil fields to the Syrian government forces in exchange for the latter to protect SDF-controlled areas.

The sources added that officers from the Syrian government forces met with SDF leaders in the al-Qamishli City Airport where they discussed handing over several oilfields in the area to the Syrian government forces. The sources did not mention details about other issues discussed in the meeting, or the outcomes of it.

On Dec. 12, 2018, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) appealed to the Syrian government to take a stand against Turkey in case the latter would launch a military operation in the area east of the Euphrates River.

The PYD in considered the political representation of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers a terrorist organization for being affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK is listed in international terrorism lists.

On Wednesday, the White House said the U.S army has started withdrawing its troops from Syria ,after the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Dec. 12, 2018,  that Turkey would launch a military operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units in the area east of the Euphrates River within days. The Pentagon said unilateral military action into Northeastern Syria by any party would be unacceptable.
