Syria - SMART

On Thursday, the executive council of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration confirmed that they continue to negotiate with the Syrian government regarding the Turkish threats to launch a military operation east of the Euphrates River and the US forces' withdrawal from Syria.

On Wednesday, the deputy head of the executive council, Elizabeth Korriya, said that they met several times with the Syrian government, Russia, France, and other western countries to  gain their support against Turkish threats.

Korriya added, “The dialogue with the regime has not stopped since the first day; the regime must maintain the sovereignty of Syria, so we the people of Syria must unite to protect our borders.”

Korriya did not address the items mentioned in the negotiations between the parties and said, “We are now in the fight against terrorism and Turkey. For me, the solution is a Syrian-Syrian solution and not through foreign parties outside Syria.”

Earlier today, a member of the People's Assembly in the Syrian government for the city of Manbij, Mujib al-Rahman al-Dandan, told the Syrian government's official media that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government are discussing the entry of the latter’s forces into Manbij to prevent a military operation.

According to al-Dandan, people put pressure of the SDF to hand over Manbij to the Syrian government. SDF parties also wanted to go to France to demand an air embargo, and others preferred to follow the negotiations with the Syrian government. Al-Dandan did not give additional details.

On Dec. 23, the Autonomous Administration denied that there were any negotiations with the Syrian government, and suggested that the latter is trying to exploit the Turkish threats and the US decision to withdraw from the region in order to enter it.

On Dec. 20, private sources said that the Syrian government talked with the SDF about the Turkish threats. The talks covered the Syrian government's taking of oil fields in exchange for protecting areas controlled by the SDF.

Meanwhile, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey will start a military operation against the SDF east of the Euphrates River, but it postponed the operation after the US decided to withdraw its troops from the region.
