Aleppo - SMART

On Sunday, 1,000 people left the city of Atarib, west of Aleppo in Northern Syria, after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) gained control of the region, according to an agreement signed with its counterpart.

Witnesses reported that Free Syrian Army fighters, media activists and civilians are among the people leaving the city, all of whom refuse the HTS' control in the region.

The witnesses added that the people leaving included residents of the neighboring village of Kafr Nuran. The people headed to the village of Maarata and continued to Afrin.

The witnesses noted that the HTS did not allow the people leaving to bring their personal weapons.

The events coincided with the HTS gaining control of Atarib due to the implementation of an agreement signed by representatives of Atarib's residents and fighters, after the HTS bombed the city, wounding three civilians with minor injuries.

Earlier, the HTS gained control of most of the western countryside of Aleppo and expelled the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement of the National Liberation Front from the region after several days of clashes, wounding and killing fighters on both sides as well as civilians. The clashes expanded to include the governorate of Idlib and the western countryside of Hama, which was relatively calm before they began.

The city of Atarib was one of the main cities in western Aleppo to participate in the revolutionary movement against the Syrian government and the HTS. The HTS tried to infiltrate the city several times, but its residents demonstrated against them, forcing them to withdraw. The Syrian government forces and Russian forces shelled the city, killing and wounding dozens of civilians.
