Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, Palestinian refugees in Syria who were internally displaced to Northern Syria announced the establishment of a Palestinian refugees association in the city of Azaz, 43 kilometers north of Aleppo.

The association's lawyer, Muhammad Abu Muhannad, said that the association will not replace other Palestinian entities, but will be established under a popular mandate in the absence of other Palestinian institutions, the Palestine Liberation Organization and United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugee in the Near East (UNRWA).

Abu Muhannad added that Palestinian refugees are concentrated in three main areas in Northern Syria: the city of Azaz and its surroundings, the Deir Balut camps west of Afrin and the governorate of Idlib. Abu Muhannad said that that their goal is to unify the voice of the Palestinians and coordinate their affairs.

Abu Muhannad stated that the suffering of the displaced Palestinians is similar to the suffering of the Syrians, but that the Palestinians have been refugees since 1948, and the Syrian government forces destroyed their areas in other parts of Syria. Abu Muhannad added around 1,500 internally displaced Palestinian families live in the region.

According to Abu Muhannad, the association is concerned with the Palestinians in the Azaz area, and tries to reach out to organizations who can help them in terms of relief, education and politics.

Thousands of forcibly displaced people from southern Damascus arrived in Northern Syria, including a large number of Palestinian refugees, after the opposition factions in the region reached an agreement with Russia and the Syrian government.
