Aleppo - SMART

The military police department in the Afrin area in northern Aleppo, Northern Syria, arrested Ranya al-Halabi, an activists working with the League of Independent Kurds of Syria, without clarifying the reason for the arrest.

Local activists reported that military police officers stormed an activity center of the Independent Kurds League and arrested al-Halabi, who ran the center, without charges.

Sources from the military police department told SMART that al-Halabi's arrest was ordered by Turkey, adding that she will be released soon after "routine measures" are completed. The sources did not clarify what measures or al-Halabi's charges.

The League of Independent Kurds of Syria defines itself as a national, voluntary gathering for independent Kurds that believe in the Syrian Revolution and its goals and principles. The gathering aims to convey the voice of independent Kurds in different local, regional, and international forums.

For months now, the areas outside Syrian government forces control in Northern and Western Syria have been home to violations by military faction members against civilians, medical workers, humanitarian workers, and activists.
