Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement released a member of the foundational committee of the Salvation Government operating in the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-controlled areas in Northern Syria, hours after detaining him near the city of Marrat al-Nu'man, Idlib.

Activists reported that the Ahrar al-Sham of the National Liberation Front (NLF), which is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement against the HTS, released Abdul Salam al-Qasim after detaining him on Wednesday night. The reason for the arrest were not clear.

The arrest followed HTS clashes with the NLF in the Idlib governorate while attempting to advance in NLF-controlled areas. The HTS gained control of villages and towns in the governorate after concluding agreements with village and town dignitaries.
