Clashes with IS kill two SDF members in eastern Deir al-Zor

On Thursday, clashes with the Islamic State (IS) near the city of al-Sha’fah, 100 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, killed two Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) members.

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

 A military source reported that clashes between the SDF and the IS took place in the al-Sour area near al-Sha’fah, as the SDF attempted to advance in the nearby village of Albu Badran. The clashes resulted in the killing of two SDF members.

The source added that the International Coalition against the IS targeted IS bases in the clashes’ location; details about the casualties were not reported.

A few days earlier, the SDF gained control of the village of al-Keshmah and parts of the city of al-Sha’fah in Deir al-Zor after fierce clashes with the IS. The clashes killed and injured members from both fighting parties.

The SDF attempt to expel the IS from its last stronghold in Deir al-Zor, as the SDF gained control of the city of Hajin and ost parts of the village of Baghouz al-Tahtani. The SDF now controls all border area with Iraq. The SDF confirmed that it will continue their battles against the IS despite the United States forces’ withdrawal from the area. The USA announced the possibility of launching an attack against IS in Syria from Iraq if necessary.
