Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced the killing of 147 Islamic State (IS) members during battles east of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

The SDF stated on its media outlets that the SDF advanced by two kilometers into IS-controlled areas near the town of al-Sha’fah. The SDF installed 29 military bases in the area.

The statement mentioned that the SDF, supported by the International Coalition against the IS warplanes, killed 147 IS members, seized their weapons, and installed 21 military bases on the perimeter of the city of Hajin.

A few days ago, the SDF gained control of the village of al-Keshmah and parts of the city of al-Sha’fah in Deir al-Zor after fierce clashes with IS members. The clashes killed and injured members from both fighting parties.

The SDF is attempting to expel the IS from its last stronghold in Der al-Zor, as the SDF gained control of the city of Hajin and most parts of the village of al-Baghouz al-Tahtani. The SDF now controls the border with Iraq.
