Deir al-Zor - SMART

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that 25,000 civilians fled from areas eastern Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, within six months as a result of the clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Islamic State (IS).

In a report published on its official website on Friday, the UNHCR said that the clashes and air raids in eastern Deir al-Zor, especially in the area of Hajin, caused the displacement of thousands of civilians to areas in Northeastern Syria, most of them children, women, and seniors.

The report noted that nearly 2,000 civilians are still trapped in IS-controlled areas, eastern Deir al-Zor, where fighting re-erupted amidst difficult humanitarian conditions, as services declined and prices of basic foods significantly rose.

The report stated that 8,500 forcibly displaced people (FDP) arrived in a difficult humanitarian situation to the al-Hol camp in al-Hasakah in the past five weeks. Some of the FDP also live in the Abu Khashab camp or local communities.

The report also said that six children under the age of 12 died after arriving at the al-Hol camp due to poor health during displacement, as some of them spent four nights or more in the desert, and under the rain in cold weather.

A few days ago, sources from the SDF reported that 30 civilian families fled from the city of al-Shaafa and the town of al-Susah, which are controlled by the IS, in eastern Deir al-Zor, to the al-Tanak oil field controlled by the SDF.

The SDF, backed by the International Coalition, is trying to expel the IS from its last area in Deir al-Zor. The SDF seized the city of Hajin and most of the al-Baghuz al-Tahtani village, amidst civilians’ displacement from the area to the governorates of al-Hasakah and al-Raqqa.
