Daraa - SMART

Gunfire by residents injured a Syrian government forces member in the city of al-Sanamayn, 50 kilometers north of Daraa, Southern Syria, as the first was trying to arrest a former commander of an Islamic battalion in the city.

On Saturday, local sources reported that members of Syrian government military security and intelligence services stormed the city to arrest the former commander of the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement, Walid Zahra, called Abu Khalid.

The sources added that the relatives of Abu Khalid attacked the Syrian government forces to prevent them from arresting Abu Khalid, and opened fire on them, injuring a member. Then the Syrian government forces withdrew from the city without being able to arrest the commander.

Tension and chaos rose in the city after the incident, amidst Syrian government forces’ threats to storm the city, according to sources.

Earlier on Friday, unknown assailants killed two Syrian government forces members and injured three others in an attack on their military headquarters in the town of Ghbagheb (60 kilometers north of Daraa).

Earlier, the Syrian government forces arrested a former Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander from the governorate of Daraa and two civilian families while they were going to Latakia.

Unknown assailants repeatedly attack the Syrian government forces checkpoints and headquarters in Daraa since the Syrian government seized the governorate under separate agreements between the FSA factions and Russia, which is the Syrian government’s ally and supporter.
