Aleppo - SMART

On Saturday, the Ishraq Development Team demonstrated in the town of Urum al-Kubra, 20 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, to raise awareness about heritage sites in the Syrian government forces-controlled city of Aleppo.

Ghiath, a member of the team, said that they invited several civil committees and individuals to participate in the event. The event included a slideshow of archeological monuments in Aleppo and banners with slogans encouraging the return to Aleppo.

A demonstrator who introduces himself as Abu Mahmoud, said that the demonstration aimed to raise awareness about Aleppo's heritage sites and "to renew the hope of returning to the city and restoring its civilization." Abu Mahmoud added that that the demonstrators raised pictures of the Citadel of Aleppo, the clock tower, and the Aleppo University.

The Ishraq Development Team was started by activists in the Syrian Revolution who organize events to raise the people's awareness about war remnants and other areas of interest.

The city of Aleppo includes more than 150 archeological sites, such as the Citadel of Aleppo, the ancient city gates, markets, churches, and mosques. The Syrian government forces bombed Aleppo when the Free Syrian Army (FSA) was in control of it, damaging many heritage sites in the city.

On December 22, 2016, the Syrian government forces and Russia launched a military operation in Aleppo and gained control of the eastern parts of the city after an agreement with the FSA. The agreement called for the deportation of fighters and civilians from the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo. The military operation killed and injured thousands of civilians and destroyed the city's infrastructure.
