Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Sunday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) gained control of the city of Shaafa, 100 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor, eastern Syria, after clashes with the Islamic State (IS).

The commander of the battalion, Shahid Abdul Basit also known as Abu al-Abd, reported to SMART that the SDF gained control of the city after clashes with the IS. The clashes lasted about 13 days.

Abu al-Abd added that the IS withdrew for the town of al-Sousse and the village of al-Boubadran.

The SDF are trying to expel the IS from its last stronghold in Deir al-Zor and gained control of the city of Hajin and most parts of the village of al-Baghuz al-Tahtani, thus gaining control of the entire border with Iraq.
