Turkey - SMART

On Monday, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that "Turkey was not against the idea of a buffer zone on the Turkish-Syrian border."

Cavusoglu's statement came after the US President Donald Trump threatened to devastate Turkey's economy if it attacks the Kurds in Syria, and said that he would establish a 20-mile safe zone there.

At a news conference with his Luxembourg counterpart, Jean Asselborn, Cavusoglu said, “We have repeatedly said that we are never afraid of threats. Threatening Turkey economically will get you nowhere,” according to Anadolu news agency.

Cavusoglu added that Washington suggested the safe zone after Turkey's insistence on launching a military operation against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) there.

Cavusoglu said, “We’re not against this idea. There is a terror corridor beyond our border. There is a terrorist organization that wants to divide Syria. This terrorist organization poses a threat to us. We are targeting this terrorist organization.”

Cavusoglu warned Washington that it is not possible to reach a satisfactory result if the Kurds are equated with the PKK. Ankara considered the YPG a part of the PKK.

Turkey plans to launch a military attack against the Kurdish People's Protection Units, which is considered an extension to the "terrorist" PKK, according to Turkey. Last Friday, the Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar stated that Turkey is preparing for a counter-terrorism military operation in areas east of the Euphrates River, while the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey had completed its preparations for a military operation.

The US and Turkish statements came amidst US’ attempts to reassure and urge Turkey to cancel its military operation. The US tries to protect the YPG before withdrawing from Syria.
