Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) stated that the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is a terrorist organization and it cannot be merged into the National Army. The FSA delivered its statements in commenting on a statement by Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, the HTS commander on the need to unify all the factions in one entity.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

Major Yousef Hamoud, the spokesperson for the National Army of the Interim Syrian Government, stated that the HTS is listed as a terrorist organization and it has nothing to do with the National Army.

Hamoud delivered his statements in response to al-Jawlani’s statement in which he emphasized the need to unify all factions under one military entity. Al-Jawlani added that the factions’ unification would prevent security violations such as thefts, kidnapping, incidents of violence, and the work of Syrian government and Islamic State’ groups in the area.

Hamoud ruled out any change in the HTS’ position towards fighting with Turkey. Hamoud commented on al-Jawlani’ s statement that the HTS supports regaining control of the areas controlled by the Kurdistani Labor Party (PKK). The HTS Shari’a official, who is called Abu al-Yaqdhan al-Masri, forbade the factions’ fighting along with Turkey in areas east of the Euphrates river.

Hamoud attributed al-Masri' and al-Jawlani' s contradicted statements to the HTS disagreements and state of uncertainty as the HTS fails to choose right sides to build alliances with.

Al-Jawlani delivered his statements as the HTS and FSA reached an agreement to end clashes between both sides in Northern Syria and transfer the area to the Salvation Government.  The agreement also stated that the FSA factions hand over their heavy weapons and checkpoints to the HTS.

Turkey intends to launch a military operation against the People’s Protection Units that Ankara says that it is affiliated with the PKK. The FSA and Turkish Army continue to send military reinforcements.
