Al-Hasakah - SMART

On Tuesday, the Kurdish Autonomous Administration said that no one put forward a proposal to establish a safe zone in Northeastern Syria.

Abdul Karim Omar, the joint head of the Autonomous Administration's foreign relations committee, said that they have not discussed the issue with the Syrian Democratic Council.

Omar added that no one has made a safe zone proposal so far, and that the only suggestions of such a zone are the United States President Donald Trump's tweets.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would establish a safe zone in Northeastern Syria with US support.

On Jan. 14, 2019, President Trump tweeted that he and Erdogan talked about establishing a 20-mile safe zone and that they do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey. The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey is not opposed to the US proposal to establish a safe zone in Northeastern Syria.

Earlier, Trump threatened to devastate Turkey's economy if it attacks the Kurds in Syria. However, Turkey said that it does not fear the US' threats.

Turkey plans to launch a military attack against the Kurdish People's Protection Units, which is considered an extension of the "terrorist" PKK, according to Turkey. Last Friday, the Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar stated that Turkey is preparing for a counter-terrorism military operation in the area east of the Euphrates River, while Erdogan said that Turkey has completed its preparations for a military operation.
