Aleppo - SMART

On Tuesday, the German Technical Cooperation Agency suspended its support of medical projects and the Free Health Directorates in Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib until further notice.

Muhammad al-Haj Kadour, the manager of the Free Aleppo Directorate, stated to the Aleppo Gate, which is one of SMART's media institutions, that the German agency suspended its entire activity and support for the health directorates due to political reasons. Haj Kadour provided no further details.

Al-Kadour emphasized that the medical sector is independent from the recent political and military changes in the area. Al-Kadour noted that suspending the support will cripple the work of the medical sector and have negative effects.

Al-Kadour noted that the German agency supported emergency systems, hospitals, medical centers, and important health projects.

The Free Aleppo Health Directorate published a statement saying that the German agency suspended the support on January 11, 2019, until further notice. The statement added that the employees in the directorate will work as volunteers.

Earlier, the United States for International Development suspended its support of medical projects in Idlib for three months before it resumed the support in December 2018.

On Tuesday, the Free Idlib Health Directorate demanded the neutralization of the medical sector from the recent military and political tension in the area after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) gained control of the area.

The German agency suspend its support after days of clashes between the HTS and Free Syrian Army in the Idlib, Aleppo, and Hama governorates. The clashes caused civil institutions, schools, universities, and police departments to shut down.
