On Tuesday, the Lebanese government declared a state of emergency to ease the suffering of Syrian refugees living in camps during the blizzard that is expected to intensify in the coming hours.

The Lebanese Minister of Interior Nihad Machnouk gave instructions to governors in all Lebanese regions that include Syrian refugee camps to declare a state of emergency.

The statement noted that the declaration of a state of emergency aims at providing the necessary assistance to ease the refugees' suffering and secure basic needs for them.

Machnouk recommended that the Civil Defense Operations Room and the Lebanese Red Cross be contacted during the coming blizzard and the expected cold temperatures, according to the weather forecasts.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese Meteorological Department predicted that the weather on Wednesday will be cloudy at dawn with strong winds, rising with waves up to 6 or 7 meters.

Snow has been forecast in areas 1,300 meters above sea level and areas 500 meters above sea level further inland with colder temperatures in the evening.

Syrian refugees in the Arsal camp suffer from difficulty in securing basic needs, especially during winter, and the lack of means to repair worn out tents, in addition to the lack of sewage networks in the area, which containts 120 camps.
