Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Salvation Government operating in the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-controlled areas distributed baby formula one day before its expiration date to local residents and forcibly displaced people (FDP) in the area of Jisr al-Shughur, 31 kilometers west of Idlib, Northern Syria.

A media activist in a camp near the city of Jisr al-Shughur, who introduced himself as Abu Yassin, reported that the FDP Affairs Committee of the Salvation Government distributed large amounts of baby formula in most of the camps in the area between the villages of al-Zouf and Khirbat al-Jawz near the Turkish border.

Abu Yassin stated that the Salvation Government distributed formula to more than seven camps in the area, adding that the formula would expire the next day.

Activists accused the organizations responsible for the formula distribution and the FDP Affairs Committee of corruption, suspecting that the delayed distribution of the nearly expired formula was caused by the organizations' attempt to sell it on the black market before finally distributing it.

In 2016, the administration of the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey refused to allow the entry of about 35,000 containers of baby formula into Syria, claiming that it had expired. The crossing administration destroyed the shipment because they could not find a legal procedure to allow the entry of expired goods.

FDP in camps in Northern Syria suffer in poor conditions, lacking basic services. The FDP appeal to humanitarian organizations and local councils to alleviate their suffering and provide medicine, vaccination, and means of heating, especially in winter, but no organization has responded to the FDP's demands. Earlier, rain water flooded several camps.
