Al-Hasakah - SMART

The Kurdish Autonomous Administration transformed the commercial movement with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq from the Semalka crossing to the al-Suwaydiya crossing in the al-Malikiyah area, 192 kilometers northeast of al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria.

The customs director at the Semalka crossing, Haval Hasan Khalil, reported that they transformed the commercial movement between the Autonomous Administration-controlled areas and the Kurdistan region of Iraq to the al-Suwaydiya border crossing.

Khalil explained that they transformed the commercial movement because the two bridges at the Semalka crossing were damaged. Khalil said that the work at the al-Suwaydiya crossing would continue until the repair of the two bridges at the Semalka crossing, which may last for two weeks.

Khalil added that the commercial movement has recently increased, but the damage of the bridges that lead to the Semalka crossing negatively affected the movement and food prices. Prices of some goods increased due to paying fees to pass through the crossing.

The Autonomous Administration agreed with the Kurdistan region of Iraq to open the al-Suwaydiya crossing to enter the heavy loads to its controlled areas, Northeastern Syria. Khalil said that they allocated the crossing for cement and iron materials mainly.

There are three crossings between the Autonomous Administration-controlled areas and the Kurdistan region of Iraq, including the al-Suwaydiya, al-Yaroubiya, and Semalka, which was closed from the Iraqi side in 2016, after the federal system was declared in Northern Syria. As a result, foodstuffs have become unavailable in the markets until the Autonomous Administration reopened it in June 2018.
