Al-Hasakah - SMART

The Kurdish Autonomous Administration presented a roadmap to Russia to start open negotiations with the Syrian government in the presence of the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen.

Kanaan Barakat, the joint chairman of the internal authority in the Autonomous Administration in al-Hasakah, told SMART that the road map should ensure the unity of the Syrian territory, a democratic republican government, and the Autonomous Administration as part of the government with representatives in the parliament in Damascus. The Autonomous Administration also wishes to raise its flag along with the flags of the Syrian government.

Barakat mentioned that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) would be part of the Syrian government forces and responsible for protecting the border, while the internal security forces, also known as the Asayish, would serve in areas of the Autonomous Administration alongside the local councils and according to the Syrian constitution.

Barakat also said that education should be in the mother language of the Autonomous Administration (Kurdish), while the Arabic language should be the official language in Syria. The faculties of history, culture, languages and literature should teach in local languages.

The roadmap included items about distributing Syrian resources evenly to all Syrian areas, according to Barakat.

On Jan. 14, 2019, the Syria's Future Party, which is close to the Autonomous Administration, stated that they reached "fair progress" in discussions with the Syrian government regarding protecting Northeastern Syria after Turkish threats of launching a military operation in the region.

On Jan. 13, 2019, the Syrian government Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Soussan announced that he supports negotiations with Kurdish parties in order to reach a political solution.
