Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) raided two villages in southern Idlib, Northern Syria, to arrest its own fighters, killing and injuring civilians during the process.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

Local activists reported that the HTS raided the village of Maarshamarin (36 kilometers south of Idlib) to arrest HTS fighters on charges of robberies and kidnapping. The activists added that both sides exchanged fire, killing a civilian and injuring his father and arresting five of the wanted fighters.

The activists added that ten HTS vehicles raided the village of Tal Minis (34 kilometers south of Idlib) arresting three HTS fighters on charges of robberies and kidnappings. The activists noted that the arrested fighters were fighters of the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement, who had subsequently joined the HTS.

The HTS regulary launches arrest campaigns under the pretext of arresting people accused of robberies, kidnappings, affiliation with the Islamic State, or working with the Syrian government forces or Free Syrian Army factions.
