Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Political Body in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria, said that the decision of some donor organizations to suspend support for the Free Idlib Health Directorate will cause a humanitarian disaster, increase civilians' suffering and deprive them of their basic rights.

The Political Body was formed in November 2016 to unify political action in the governorate by including most of its civil society organizations and local bodies, at a time when political bodies were formed in other governorates.

In a statement, the Political Body added that they regretted that some organizations stopped their medical support for the Idlib Health Directorate, which provides medical and ambulance services to more than three million Syrians in the governorate.

The statement said that the health directorate is an independent and impartial institution that does not belong to any party. It is also not affected by changes in military control in the region, and works according to the standards of international organizations to provide medical services to civilians.

The statement called on the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to continue supporting the Health Directorate to avoid the disaster, in line with international resolutions and human rights organizations.

Earlier, the Free Idlib Health Directorate said that the decision of some donor organizations to suspend the support of health projects and free health directorates threatens about 80 thousand beneficiaries of medical services in the governorate.

The German Technical Cooperation Agency suspended its support of medical projects and the Free Health Directorates in Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib until further notice.

The organizations suspended their support after days of clashes between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and Free Syrian Army in the Idlib, Aleppo, and Hama governorates. The clashes caused civil institutions, schools, universities, and police departments to shut down.
