Al-Hasakah - SMART

Fifteen thousand Syrian displaced people and Iraqi refugees have fled from the Deir al-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria, to the al-Hol Camp, 70 kilometers south of al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria, since the beginning of 2019.

Mohammad Ahmad Ali, the head of the public relations department of the al-Hol Camp, told SMART on Wednesday that the camp received 6,103 Iraqi refugees distributed in 1,705 families, and 8,334 Syrian internally displaced people distributed in 2,321 families.

Ali said that the camp now resides a total of 22,356 people distributed in 6,068 families, adding that the most significant difficulty the camp management faces is providing tents for the new arrivals.

Ali also said that 3,200 people arrived at the camp on Tuesday night and now reside in the reception tent, which is a large, shared tent that hosts newly arrived families until smaller tents are distributed to them. Ali clarified that several of the newcomers are sleeping in the open air because the reception tent is overcrowded.

Abu al-Layth, an Iraqi refugee, said that the journey from the village of al-Baghouz to the camp took three days, adding that his group headed for the camp after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advanced in their battle against the Islamic State (IS).

Abu al-Layth also said that several families are still stuck in al-Baghouz trying to exit, and living on whole grain wheat bread and herbs.

The al-Hol Camp receives dozens of displaced families from Deir al-Zor on a daily basis due the battles between the SDF and the IS.

In March 2016, the executive office of the Autonomous Administration opened the al-Hol Camp to host displaced people fleeing IS-controlled areas and Iraqi refugees from the border areas near the town of al-Hol in eastern al-Hasakah.
