Damascus - SMART

On Thursday, a member of the Abu al-Fadel al-Abbas Iraqi militia died in a fire that burned his house in the Sayyidah Zaynab area in southern Damascus.

Activists and people loyal to the Syrian government said on their social media pages that an electric shortage caused a fire that killed the militia member Ali Mamita, as it spread in the house.

Also on social media, people from the area said that firefighters and ambulances arrived late at the accident scene after the fire had burned the whole house, without the neighbors being able to put the fire out.

Days earlier, seven children siblings were killed in the al-Amarah neighborhood in Damascus due to a fire caused by a similar shortage.

Activist accused Iranian militias of starting several fires to force people out of their homes and shops in several areas in Damascus, especially in the old city, while the Syrian government forces said that the fires were caused by power shortages or the citizens' misuse of electricity in heaters.
