Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Thursday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested a number of men in the town of al-Mansoura, 28 kilometers west of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria. Earlier, security tension rose while the people were holding the funeral of a man killed by SDF members during an attempt to arrest him.

Local sources reported that tribal dignitaries in the area held the funeral of Zein al-Zein, from the al-Bukhmis clan. The Asayish forces killed al-Zein while trying to detain him in order to enlist him in SDF recruitment.

The sources said that tribal dignitaries demanded the Asayish forces to give them the killer. The sources added that SDF members launched an arrest campaign after the funeral and detained eight men for participating in riots in the town.

On Wednesday, the people set the Asayish headquarters on fire and burned three SDF vehicles parked near the headquarters, amidst security alert in the town and Asayish shooting, injuring a civilian. Therefore, the Asayish forces imposed a 24-hour curfew in the town.

In a statement, the SDF said that what happened in al-Mansoura was part of what it called "obscurantist forces" to spread fear and prevent stability. The SDF added that a group of sleeper cells incited the people to carry out subversion acts, adding that its forces took the required measures responsibly.

Al-Mansoura is considered important due to its geographic location being the last SDF-controlled town in southern al-Raqqa, bordering areas controlled by the Syrian government forces and their allied militias.

Tensions rose between the SDF and the tribes of al-Raqqa. Some considered dealing with the SDF treachery. Earlier, the al-Halisat tribe called on the International Coalition to release the detainees in SDF prisons. Also, a delegation of tribal dignitaries demanded the al-Raqqa local council to stop compulsory recruitment.
