On Thursday, a source from the United States Secretary of Defense (Pentagon) stated that the US sent military reinforcements to Syria to secure the US forces’ withdrawal.

The source added the CNN channel that the Islamic State threatens the US Army (IS), Syrian government forces, and Iranian militias. The source noted that the reinforcements would move between different Syrian areas. The source stated no further details of the withdrawal.

The source suspected the reinforcements to belong to the US Marenz, adding that the reinforcements are meant to secure the US soldiers and equipment while they withdraw from Syria. The source specified neither the size of the support nor the locations they will head to.

The US sent the reinforcements days after two explosions killed and injured five US soldiers in the city of Manbi in Aleppo and the city of al-Shadadi in al-Hasakah. The IS claimed responsibility for the explosions.

On December 19, 2018, the US decided to withdraw its forces from Syria but later added new conditions to the withdrawal. The US refused to set a specific date for the withdrawal. US officials said that the withdrawal decision followed an agreement between the US president President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
