Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Friday, dozens of residents demonstrated in the Syrian Democratic Forces-controlled area of the al-Shaitat area, 90 kilometers northeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, to demand better services.

Local sources reported that about 300 people demonstrated through the streets of Abu Hammam, al-Qashika and al-Qahawi villages in the Shaitat area. The demonstrators closed the main roads using burning tires, in protest against the lack of services provided by the Deir al-Zor local council.

The sources added that the demonstrators demanded the improvement of living conditions and agricultural services and to provide them with fuel for heating. They also demanded the repair of areas affected by International Coalition shelling.

The demonstrators condemned what they described as the corruption of the Deir al-Zour local council. They also raised banners reading, “The demands of the al-Shaitat people are supporting the martyrs' families, livelihoods, agriculture and farmers, and providing jobs for young people, and our rights from oil resources.”

Last month, dozens of protesters from tribes in the village of al-Shuhail (37 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor) protested to demand a share of the oil well production controlled by the SDF. The protesters also called upon the Autonomous Administration to rehabilitate roads, operate irrigation pumps, and provide power and diesel.

Local activists reported that the youths from the Shaitat tribe blew off oil wells near the al-Seyjan compound east of the village of al-Hariji, in protest against poor economic conditions due their deprival of recycling oil.
