Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, a private anonymous sources told SMART that the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) arrested the nurse Muhannad al-Akl from the city of Kafr Nubl in southern Idlib, Northern Syria, after criticizing the HTS.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The source added that the HTS arrested al-Akl on charges of editing a statement from the hospital in Maarrat al-Nu'man that accused the HTS of attacking the hospital's medical staff during clashes with the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham Movement in March 2018.

The source noted that the HTS said that it found voice recordings of al-Akl on the phone of the lawyer Yasser al-Saleem, who was detained by the HTS on September 22, 2018. The HTS accused al-Saleem and al-Akl of inciting local residents against the HTS.

On Saturday, local sources said that unknown masked men kidnapped al-Akl on his way to work at the Maarrat al-Nu'man Hospital. Activists accused the HTS of arresting him.

The HTS regularly arrests medical staff, media workers and employees of humanitarian organizations on various charges, without presenting them to courts or revealing their charges and places of detention to the public.
