Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, the students of the Idlib University of the Salvation Government's High Education Council demonstrated in support of the "Impeach al-Assad" campaign, which activists shared on social media to prosecute the Syrian government and its head for using chemical weapons against civilians.

Wasim al-Khalaf, the Idlib University communications manager, told SMART that the university organized the demonstration as part of the "Impeach al-Assad" campaign, which was launched by the Chemical Violations Documentation Center in Syria (CVDCS). Teachers and students from several university departments participated in the demonstration to tell the world that the "Syrian people will not forget those who were martyred by the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons," according to al-Khalaf.

Firas Alloush, the head of the Idlib municipality, said that municipality officials participated along other civil bodies in the demonstration, which demanded the prosecution of the Syrian government for using chemical weapons against the Syrian people.

Alloush added, "Those who committed crimes against the Syrian people should not escape punishment no matter how much time passes. The international community must raise awareness of this issue and prosecute the criminals."

The Syrian government forces have used toxic gases on several occasions in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria, the Hama and Homs governorates, Central Syria, and the Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus. The international community responded with condemning the attacks, while humanitarian and legal organizations called for putting an end to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
